Neck pain

What is neck strain?

Neck strain is an irritation to tendons, muscles and ligaments in the upper back and neck area. Whiplash is the result of an injury to the neck due to a sudden extension and flexion commonly occurring after an auto accident.

Causes

Neck strain can result from an abrupt back and forth forceful movement by the neck, such as whiplash.

Common symptoms symptoms may include neck stiffness, injuries to the muscles and ligaments (myofascial injuries), headache, dizziness, burning or prickling, or shoulder or back pain. Patients who have been involved in and accident have indicated suffering from memory loss, concentration impairment, nervousness/irritability, sleeplessness, fatigue or depression.

  • Medical history

  • Physical exam

  • X-rays

  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)

Treatment for individuals with neck strain will depend on the severity and current condition of the patient. Some neck pain treatment may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, a cervical collar, range of motion exercises, physical therapy, and cervical neck traction. Heat therapy may also be applied to  relieve muscle tension.

Most patients recover within 3 months after the injury. Again this all depends on the severity of the patients injuries.

Statistics

Neck pain is very common:

  • Around 10% of the adult population at any one time is suffering from a stiff neck;

  • X-ray signs (but not necessarily symptoms) of Osteoarthritis of the neck (cervical spondylosis) are present in as much as 50% of those over 50.

  • Disc problems are present in as many as 40% of males, and 28% of females between the ages of 55 and 64.

Neck muscles can be strained from poor posture — whether it's leaning over your computer or hunching over your workbench. Osteoarthritis also is a common cause of neck pain. Rarely, neck pain can be a symptom of a more serious problem.Jul 9, 2015 Neck pain -
